If you're a woman over 40 and feeling off—maybe more anxious than usual, tired even after a full night’s sleep, or like your hormones and mood are all over the place, it might be tempting to blame your genes.
You may have heard things like:
“You have the MTHFR gene, that’s why you feel this way.”
“Anxiety runs in your family.”
“Your mom had thyroid issues, so it’s inevitable.”
But here’s the truth:
Your genes are just the blueprint.
How you build your health? That comes from your environment, your habits, your mindset, and the way you care for your body every single day.
Genes Are Not Your Fate
It’s completely normal to have SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), what some call “dirty genes.” Everyone has them. But having a genetic predisposition doesn’t mean you’re doomed to develop anxiety, depression, fatigue, or chronic illness.
What matters most is how your environment and lifestyle influence the expression of those genes. I like to say:
“Your genes may whisper your tendencies but your daily choices determine how loud they get.”
It’s More Than Family History, It’s the Environment You Share
Yes, illnesses like heart disease, autoimmunity, or anxiety may run in families but so do:
Mold exposure
Chemicals like phthalates and endocrine disruptors
Processed food diets
Chronic stress
Poor sleep habits
Beliefs about pushing through or staying quiet about symptoms
It’s not just the genes, it’s the conditions those genes are exposed to.
My Own Story: Supporting My COMT Gene
In my own health journey, I learned I carry a SNP in the COMT gene, which is tied to how the body breaks down stress hormones. It’s often linked to anxiety and a slower ability to “come down” from stress.
And yet, I feel calm and grounded most days, not because I changed my gene, but because I’ve learned how to support it through:
Cold plunges (which are amazing for COMT regulation and resilience).
A nourishing, anti-inflammatory diet.
Walking, yoga, and meditation.
Mindset work that helps me stay out of survival mode and in alignment.
These are the exact kinds of strategies I teach my clients and they’re part of what makes my coaching so effective.
How We Use the LIGHT Method to Support Your Genes (and Everything Else)
In my practice, I use my 5-step LIGHT Method to help women over 40 understand their body and feel better, without overwhelm or shame. It’s a root-cause approach to healing that focuses on:
L – Learn Your Body’s Signals
Understand what your body is really trying to tell you from symptoms to energy shifts.
I – Identify Root Causes
Look deeper than symptoms to uncover imbalances in gut health, hormones, detox pathways, and nervous system regulation.
G – Gather Supportive Habits
Build consistent, aligned routines that clean and support your genetic pathways through food, movement, mindset, and more.
H – Heal Through Connection & Coaching
You’ll feel seen, heard, and understood, not just coached. This is a collaborative process where your voice matters.
T – Take Empowered Action
Create a plan that’s doable and tailored to you, so you can make progress and sustain it for the long term.
Whether you’ve done genetic testing or not, the LIGHT Method gives us a clear, personalized path forward to support your whole health.
You’re Not Broken, You Just Need the Right Support
If you’ve felt like something’s off and you’re not sure where to start, you’re not alone. Your genes are not a life sentence. They’re just one part of the equation and when we pair them with a supportive lifestyle, the results can be life-changing.
You don’t have to do this alone. You don’t have to have it all figured out. And you don’t have to fear what “runs in your family.”
