One of the hardest things about supplements is knowing which ones you can actually trust.
And the recent news about Procter & Gamble acquiring Thorne got me thinking about this.
Thorne has built a strong reputation for high-quality, practitioner-focused supplements. But whenever a large corporation acquires a supplement company, I pay attention.
And here's why.
It's not necessarily that the quality will go down. We don't know that.
But formulations can change after an acquisition.
Ingredients can change.
The form of a nutrient can change.
The amount of an ingredient can change.
Excipients and fillers can change.
And here's the part that I think consumers need to understand:
You may not get a big announcement saying, "We've changed the formula."
Sometimes the bottle can look almost identical.
So if you have a supplement that you've been taking for years and the company changes ownership, don't assume it's still exactly the same product.
Turn that bottle around.
Look at the Supplement Facts.
Look at the serving size.
Look at the amount of each ingredient.
Look at the forms of the nutrients.
And look at the inactive ingredients.
Because even if the front of the bottle looks exactly the same, the formula on the back may not be.
And this is why I tell my clients to become educated supplement consumers—not just brand loyalists.

1. WHO owns the company?
I want to know who is actually behind the brand and whether ownership has recently changed.
2. WHERE is it manufactured?
I want strong manufacturing and quality-control practices.
3. HOW is it tested?
I want to see meaningful testing and, when appropriate, credible third-party certification.
4. WHAT form of the nutrient am I getting?
"Magnesium" isn't just magnesium.
"Folate" isn't necessarily the same as folic acid.
The form and dose can matter.
5. WHAT are the actual doses?
Don't be impressed by a long ingredient list. Look at how much you're actually getting of each ingredient.
6. WHAT else is in the capsule?
This is one of the biggest things people overlook.
Turn the bottle over and look at the inactive ingredients.
Are there unnecessary colors?
Artificial flavors or sweeteners?
Preservatives?
Fillers?
Oils or other ingredients you don't want?
You can't evaluate a supplement by looking only at the pretty marketing on the front.
7. WHAT are they testing for?
Depending on the product, I want to know about things like heavy metals, microbes, pesticides, adulterants and other contaminants.
8. WHERE are the ingredients coming from?
Transparency around sourcing matters to me.
9. AND DO I HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE?
This isn't because I think every supplement company is going to suddenly become bad.
It's because companies change.
They get acquired.
They change suppliers.
They change manufacturing.
They reformulate.
And sometimes the consumer doesn't realize it happened until they're already taking the new product.
That's why I like having several high-quality options that I know and trust.
I have many of my practitioner-grade favorites available through Fullscript and Nutridyne, along with a variety of other supplement brands and nutritional products.
You can create your own account, explore the products, and get practitioner pricing on eligible products.

And here's the biggest takeaway:
Don't just remember the name of your favorite supplement. Remember what is actually IN the bottle.
Because if the company changes, the bottle may still look familiar—but the formula may not be.
So periodically check the label.
Same brand doesn't always mean same formula.
And that's why being an educated supplement consumer matters.
