If you're a woman over 40 and feeling off, you’re not alone.
Maybe you’ve said things like:
“I used to have more energy.”
“My sleep is a mess.”
“I feel wired but tired all the time.”
“I’m gaining weight even though I haven’t changed how I eat.”
“My moods feel unpredictable and not like me.”
You may have been told this is just “part of getting older.” But there's a deeper system at play here, and it’s one most women have never heard of: the HPA Axis.
What is the HPA Axis?
The HPA Axis stands for the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis. It’s a complex communication system between your brain (specifically your hypothalamus and pituitary gland) and your adrenal glands.
Think of it as your body’s central stress response system, regulating how your body responds to everything from mental stress to blood sugar fluctuations to inflammation. It also plays a major role in energy, sleep, blood pressure, blood sugar, digestion, and you guessed it—hormone balance.
Why Is the HPA Axis So Important for Women 40+?
As we enter midlife, our sex hormones (like estrogen and progesterone) begin to fluctuate and eventually decline. But here’s what most women don’t realize: when ovarian hormone production slows down, the adrenal glands pick up some of the slack especially when it comes to making estrogen precursors and managing cortisol.
But if your adrenals are already stressed or dysregulated, aka your HPA Axis is out of balance, your body is going to struggle. You may notice symptoms like:
Chronic fatigue or “crashing” in the afternoon
Sleep disruptions or waking at 3 a.m.
Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
Sugar or salt cravings
Weight gain (especially around the belly)
Brain fog
Low libido

How We Support the HPA Axis in Functional Medicine Coaching
In my work with women over 40, we always address the HPA Axis because without a regulated stress response, it’s nearly impossible to fully balance your hormones.
We start by asking the deeper questions:
What’s been draining your energy?
How are you supporting your nervous system?
Are you eating in a way that stabilizes your blood sugar?
Are you resting as much as you’re doing?
Using my 5-step LIGHT Method, we work together to:
Identify daily stressors, both physical and emotional.
Rebuild adrenal resilience through supportive foods, hydration, and rest.
Establish nervous system regulation practices (think: breathwork, gentle movement, structured routines).
Use functional nutrition and lifestyle strategies to support cortisol balance.
Educate around supplements that may help (while never prescribing).
The goal isn’t just to “manage stress”, it’s to restore your body’s ability to adapt, respond, and recover. That’s the magic of HPA Axis support. It becomes the foundation for better energy, clearer thinking, deeper sleep, and a more stable mood.
You Don’t Have to Power Through It Alone
If you’re tired of feeling tired, wired, bloated, emotional, or just not like yourself, it’s time to look beyond band-aid fixes. Supporting your HPA Axis is one of the most powerful ways to create true, lasting hormone balance especially in your 40s, 50s, and beyond.
In my coaching programs, we work together to build a plan that fits your body, your life, and your goals. You don’t have to do it alone and you don’t have to figure it all out yourself.
